For Wired Magazine’s annual trade show, Nextfest, Tronic created video content for the events main sponsor, General Electric. The videos were projected on a 30-foot screen that greeted the thousands of guests entering the event in New York City’s Javits center. “Building Dreams,” stars a little boy with wooden building blocks in a micro to macro scenario inspired by the shifts in scale of the Eames film Powers of 10. Beginning leisurely with the boy happily adding block to block, the piece rapidly accelerates through the construction of buildings, towns and cities, with bridges and highways, and flies over a frenetic global construction scene and heads heavenward to climatically burst into the GE logo.

I have a project of 2 bedroom unit at One Amber.

Start work on 21 June 2010.

It is a very fast project as the Client wish to rent it out by July.
In order to get a better rental rates, my Client had engaged my design service to enhance the property value.
I proposed to do the basic items needed by most of the tenants.
And provide a concept and design style .
Budget set and we had start construction works.

Basic electrical works with false ceiling design.
Whole house painting works.
Shoe cabinet on bay window
T.V. console with feature wall.
Study table on the bay window of bedroom 2.
Granite top on bay window of master bedroom.
Outdoor wood decking above planter box.

We were delay by the developer sub-con by 1 week.
I promise my client to finish in 3 week time.
Up to now, every sub-con is on time and on target.

The architectural ideas competition, which is the first component of the series of events, runs from 8th March 2010 to 31 May 2010 and is open to participants, from any country or territory. To be judged by internationally recognized theoreticians and practitioners from across the world familiar with community-based built projects such as Sou Fujimoto, George Kunihiro and Edward Ng, the competition hopes to create new conversations that will contribute meaningfully to the dialogue about the Asian City and its future.

Finally, I'm going to design my own apartment.
We have done the wet works aka renovation before we moved in.
Now, we are going to start installation of cabinets.

Concept: Modern Asian in minimalist touch.

In order to blend in 2 generation taste and collections,
I have to create a design solution that gather the best of both world.

I have research on our lifestyle and habits.
We have determine what we need and what we feel is good to have.
AFterwhich, we set a budget for the project.

I will data the transformation.
My friend and relatives are waiting to see the final result.

Architecture 2008 -review.

I have not been to Orchard Road for a while.
Since like many new buildings have rise. Here's one of the cool building in the Silent position that she have established.

Minimalist design.

The Central space (PUBLIC space) divided the building while display another features of the building.
For a passer-by like me, I will try to take a peek at what activity is going on in the space which is in orange glow.

Clean-cut lines define another beauty in architecture.
Not much privacy was allow to expose itself from the tinted window glass.

I have yet to notice this building until I was standing along the Somerset MRT station ,exit towards the Youth Park.
Since when, this building erected? I ask my friend.

And I can ensure you that if you ever goes up to one of the unit, you can expect a great views of our shopping streets.

When I was in China, I have to see this sign every time I reached the Airport at Shen Zhen.

And I will ask myself, Do I look like I'm from outer planets?

I took this photo in 2007, I was there for April, May, June, July and August. Before that, I was there at January 2007 before Chinese New year.

Major Cafe chain; Starbucks.

A little background notes:

In design of the Retail space, we have to understand the story behind the services or products that the Client provide.
In all cases, as a designer, we need to follow the Company (Client) direction on their branding.
Thus, they will provide you with the list of what is a 'must-have'.

The Starbucks Brand.

If you ever try to notice, in every Starbucks cafe, there is a few elements that are 'must-have'.
All of the elements make up to what a Starbucks cafe should be. It provide the same Brand and environment to the end-user in every countries. Meaning; every Starbucks cafe appear to be the same.

We need to create the same retail experience that the end-user have when they visit the cafe.

Beside that, we need to answer to the condition of the store/shop site.

We will look at a few cases that motivate designer to provide design solutions which answer to site condition.

Why?

The only 'mock-up' Fireplace I have seen in shop in Singapore that provide a sense of place.
The same feeling you will get when you live in the country that have winter season.

What is the function of a fireplace?
To gather the family members in that house to the living room to keep warm in the winter.
In addition, the family members get to chat with one another keeping the relationship warm and cozy.

You get to enjoy this in Designed condition in warm Singapore over a cup of coffee with your close friends.

The linear arrangement of store's services kitchen and casher counter in respond to the space.

The above example reflect the skills of the designer for this cafe. Well done.

THe Day to start work.

According to the Lunar Calender of Chinese Culture, today is the Birth of Heaven ( Tian Kong).
Last night, many Chinese have pray to (Tian Kong) at a 'good' hours. Chinese Feng Shui.
Thus, today is a good day for start work.

I'm very lucky enough to be a part of the Design Centre whereby I have provide my services to re-model the interior spaces and to fit in a new energy and feel into turning the existing place to house the new <60 Design Centre.

Stage now: It is in the process of getting the budget from the top.

The Layout and basic design is done by last year.
Most of the costing is provided and added.

Hopefully, we can finish renovation by early March.

Project Semi-D at East side.

Project Landed Semi-D House.

This project have been going on for the year of 2007.
And now, it have been near to completion soon.

I visited the Site and I was in shock by the speed of every Company involved.
The Last time that I was there, the place look like what I have seen since Jan 2007.
A big mess. Thank God, I'm not the main Contractor.

In this project, I am the Interior designer who plan and layout the spaces.
I provided

a layout of the whole house,
a detail drawings of the dry kitchen and
perspective of the dry kitchen.
Lighting and electrical plans.

M and E was done by Mtech.
Project Manager : The owner ,himself.
Main Con: some guy.

The project was delay by the safety of the workers were not met.
A penalty of 3 month no works to be carried out.

All this happened when I was in China doing another project.
All thanks to modern Technology, I am able to stay contact with the owner.

From the look of the house, I must say that the owner do have a good taste in life.
A bit of mistake in some area, but overall it is a massive change in the house.
I'm sure that the owner and family members will stay in this house for good.
If I am the owner, I will stay there forever.

The space that he have is beyond any semi-Detached House I have seen.
As the house was build in (before I was born) 1960s-70s .
Architect that built the house have a 'normal' name. Mr Tan Ah Long.

From the surrounding houses, you can see many addition structure change.
A few of them, have 'great taste'. Like living in coffin. (photo and topic in next blog to come).
But don't be 'pan dan'.

But to my project:
I can't wait to see the furniture and other soft furnishing to be install or place.
ANOTHER great project clear.

Public Toilet:

Location: EastPoint Mall at Simei ,Singapore.

Here's a look at DEsign of a Public Toilet.

The Wash basin area look great. Simple and clean. There is a consideration for children also. Look at the low height wash basin.

Now, look at this photo of the urinal area. Note the distance between the wall and the urinal.
What we have here is a space issues. Do not expect a big size man to use that 2 urinal at the end.
And we are fine with this design.

Bad Design

Bad Design.

I am only saying the opinion of common sense.
And I donot know the person or the whole team involved.

Here's a look at Bad design in the making.

Location : Singapore. Bedok Reservoir.

Issues: The Roof system of the market.

Please noted that the weather in Singapore is tropical.
Design of the roof should be consider for this matter.

There have been an up-graded on the following Market at Bedok Reservoir Road.
But it seem to be design in a bad way in term of when it rain.

Here's a look at the small shop designed as a hut.

Please look at the temporary 'roof system'.

Rain will pour into the shop and businesses will be affected. There are no shelter provided.
The shop owners have to install their own 'roof'. And this also proved to be a matter of which owner build first and the rest follow. Some of the owner have no concern of others as they allow rainwater from their side to flow onto others' shop.

The outcome?
A big messy 'roof' system that are install by others.

Now, the lastest news was that the HDB will re-do the whole area again because of a pipeline that are in the ground have leakage problems. Now, more issues for the shop owners. They may have to move out or re-located again. In Hokkien: 'sway' (bad luck).

My Love for Old Shophouses.

Here's a look at shophouses in Singapore.

I took some photo of Shophouses in Singapore while hunting for a place to rent. I was looking for a retail/ office place to rent under the DIS project. But most of the old shophouse are placed ay a very high rental market.

This unit at Neil Road ,Unit 81. Next to the SINGAPORE INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS.
When I was there at that moment, the whole unit was empty. I believe that someone/ business firm may have taken up the rental of this shophouse.

The design of the shophouse is very good. It have a front foyer where people can gather and stay around for a cup of coffee or tea. And I have seen that the interior is huge with another 2 level above. The rental rate must be super high as location is very near Chinatown and in CBD also. Too bad, I cannot afford to rent it yet.

I brought a few boxes for the designer who I work with in China.

But the true is that they are sale not designer. And most of them are contractor based company trying to take our pie.
They give 'free interior design'.
How can we be so 'cheap'? FREE.....

3 years of training in design study.
What a waste when most of us have lost the passion in design.
Singapore have such a 'bad' environment for interior design to grow.

Design Note:

A look at Architecture and design.

Here's a start to take notice in the architecture and design scene in Singapore.

1st up.

I was walking along the urban jungle of Tam-pines when a great Machine landed on my side. It look like a transformer wannable. Here's the picture taken.
Not to be alarmed as 'it' have not been moblie.

The real fact:

A de-construction concept have been used in the design of a multi-purpose hall at this neighbourhood.
The structure is very out-of-place. I afraid that most of the resident living in the area will not be about to understand the beauty of the design.

The hall is built at open space near few block of HDB Flats. Traditionally, the hall is used to house events like weddings, wakes and residents' events.

Project 07 - PlayHub retail shop

Project 07

Retail Shop for Handphone and Games.

Client : PlayHub pte. ltd.

Location : Singapore. West area.

Background:

The client wish to open a retail shop for sale of handphone and hand-held game and console.
The shop have been selected and rent.
The size of the shop is very small but the location of the shop is very ideal.
The shop face a MRT station entrance/exist. Every day, there are a good number of people walking by.

I was engaged as the consultant on 24 Oct 2007, Wed.
The client wish to open the shop as soon as possible due to the start of rental is 07 Nov 07.
The timeline is very limited in this project.

The layout is very simple and there's no much of design.
But we must also think about the brand of the shop for the future.

Research:
Most of the shop in that area have minimal renovation works done also. Some of them have just a little counter in front of other shop which they sub-rent. To me, this kind of small ventures have a 'hit and run' feel. Some of them( counters) belong to the retail shop which sell the same products.
Another things that I have noticed is that they(the Handphone shop) usually engage the company of either Nokia or Sony ericsson or Singtel to do a display cabinet.
Most of the shop have no major concept.
Maybe, the only concern is to make a profit and stay at that way.
Open and close , open and close...........
Only those in the major shopping mall spent their money in renovation.

Solution:

Budget: limited class C.

Design Colour: White,Green and Blue.

Interior: Clean, minimal and a sense of high-tech.
Many area to be develop in the future.

Branding:
a) Colour used: Green and Blue.
b) Keeping to the consumer side, a direct logo was designed by Green Art.

Project- Temasek Design School CDI <60

TP CDI and beyond 60s Center.
Client : Temasek Design School

Time: 13 Sept 2007
1st meeting at Site. Received Layout from Lena.
Things to do is being listed.
Offer 2 type of option; cheap make-over or expensive redo.

Background:

Temasek Design School (TDS).
The TDS will add this new sector/department into the existing CDI building.
In order to house the 2 department in 1 space, the TDS needs to re-do/make-over the existing spaces. KDS have been ask to re-design the spaces within their Budget and many limitations.

For the next few month, I will have to co-ordinate the design and the sub-contractors.

The Project will take KDS into another level.
In KDS portfolio, we will have another great project that will be visit by many people from all over the world.

Project -Retail shop named '3'

Project Haji Lane

Client : Trialogue LLC.

Shop name: ; '3'

Concept:

A undergound street movement that inspire the interior of the shop. By contrasting the 2 seperate storey of the shophouse, the interior direction is on the opposite edge. In layman term; Heaven and middle earth.

There will not be any introduction in the exterior of the shop but only with minimal indentity of the name of the shop and the logo.

The exterior of the shop stand out on its own. Location is great as it is in the center of the lane.
You may have miss the shop as you wonder if you should enter or walk pass. But if you are daring enough, you should enter into the tunnel of three. Let the light led you.

The owner of '3' want you to engage them. Once you are in the shop, you can never leave the shop until you understand what real street wear is. Dress well and stay out of cheap fake goods.
Ask more questions and you may be know as a person with class and taste. Or you prefer factory mass-produced you.

Design of the interior:
You have to see and feel the shop space to tell.
No words can show you.
